Coming to America!!!

25 Jun 08

The first striking thing when my journey started was the New Hyderabad Airport… well, that sure is a Wow… absolutely above international standards in outlook, performance and management. congenial environment. Great amount of parking space.. about a 100 terminals…
and to top it all – a high class Lounge Bar inside the security lounge… and that sure is a wow… a beer in there while you wait for boarding call will never go waste…

I took my flight and landed at Mumbai… (not tubes yet…) and the moment I stepped outside the craft, that familiar smell of salt and humidity in the air (unique to Mumbai), hit my nostrils and a deep breadth with a little smile was a natural reaction… and with the smile came countless memories of my 4 years in Mumabi… I guess, I wouldn’t be in love with any city other than Mumbai for many years more to come… But, that’s for another blog🙂 …

Mumbai Domestic airport after 2 years is so different… i took a AC Airport coach ride to the international airport… and there you go… Traffic Jam… so typical for Mumbai… a 25 min ride become 1.5 hour ride…

Jet Airways is quite paranoid about security and who gets on the craft, passport verification, Visa verification… and they have some high-tech scanners and software that makes sure the right people get on their flight… They even rechecked our carry-in baggage (and us!!!) just outside the craft after Airport security scan…

I must say, I had a good feeling about this trip…
I asked for an aisle and I got a preffered aisle, one that’s right after the section partition… so, long range leg stretch was possible…

Jet Airways International is good…. Service.. good… Security… Good…. Food… good… in flight entertainment…. very good…
Brussels Airport – average airport.. better than Heathrow, not better than Zurich… apart from the strong Jet Airways foorprint, another striking thing was a regular Electronics accessories shop… I was browsing through some iPod accessories… and walking from aisle to aisle, I saw naked women on a DVD cover… i thoght, I made a mistake… I’m too tired and a had a couple of whiskeys, maybe even feeling lonely…. but i pinched myself and checked again… right on the airport boarding lounge, a harmless electronics shop, open from all sides, where kids can easily walk in… 2 aisles full of porn DVDs visible from all over. I’m sure this doesn’t even happen in North America ouside porn shops… Phew!! I somehow recovered from my dose of European cultural shock…… while browsing though some of these DVD covers (😉 boys will be boys)…
No securities this time while boarding the Jet flight from Jet staff… so, someone could play foul while boarding from India but not from Brussels… weird…..

The US Immigration officer’s question surprised me a lot… “Tell me something about the project you are here for?”… now, what does this bugger understand about the projects we do… anyone can create a big story and he’ll stamp the person in… but……… whatever…
Anyway, now I’m here, in Newark waiting to board my Minneapolis flight… (where I have a middle seat) and a heavy weight champion sitting beside me is supposed to be my neighbour on the aisle… The good part about my journey seems over…

I wrote the above blog, but never got to posting it… so, I’ll complete my story before posting…
Though the Continental craft was quite shaky and my neighbours weren’t friendly, I reached Minneapolis in 1 piece and checked into my hotel 28 hours after I started from Hyderabad…
