Fun and Inspiration in Chicago!!!

When I saw the movie Chicago, all I wanted to do was to go to Chicago and visit a Jazz Bar to watch a Zeta-Jones style dance…

1st week in Minneapolis and a long weekend was up and around..
Sid wanted meets his Bua… Abhilasha, her son… Soumya, just accompanying Abhilasha… Ketan, what else to do on a long weekend???
So, I too don’t waste a long weekend and book tickets to Chicago… well, can’t drive.. we’ve been in the US for 7 days, for God’s sake!!! We booked Greyhound…

what a pathetic bus in which I got to sit on half a seat.. Bad road trip…Tired and disgusted, we reached Chicago… Just from a first glance of downtown at the break of dawn, i knew this downtown is good… and then we met the ever entertaining KC Gorakhpur waale…

A 3 hour wait on the Union station and we went off in Metra… There I met a person who really inspired me… Abhilasha’s sister’s husband Rajiv…. nice, fun loving person.. but, most important, a guy who is not been running with the bandwagon… A person who knows what he wants from life and set en route to finding self-actualization…

I had always heard stories of Indians working in the US for 5-7 years, then ending up opening their own companies… and being successful… and here was one such guy driving me to his house for breakfast narrating his story in bits and pieces, laughing on our stupid young jokes and remembering his old pal from Gorakhpur…

He told us how when he graduated from IIT, he worked in a PSU for 5 years and then went ahead to do his MBA from IIM-C. so far so good… he could’ve had a great salaried life… But, chose to move to US and start a coding career from scratch… worked a independent consultant for 7 years and BAM!!! the manager inside him spoke up and asked him to put his technical experience and management education together and start-up an organization….

All of us… ok.. 99% of us have a dream, but we are running behind what everyone is doing, because “everyone” has a nice paying job which can buy them a house, a fancy car and an annual vacation, children’s tution and a small saving for retirement….. And the classic story… we forget our dream…

I’ll leave it for life to decide my fate…

Enough for the Inspiration part…. I’ll come to fun now…

Day 1 (July 4). Sears Towers Skydeck- it’s beatiful… you can see far reach of the city till horizon (they said, 4 states but we couldn’t figure out🙂 ) and the lake is magnificent… what’s lacking is – Action… In addition to Metro reach, CN Tower in Toronto has an open to air section and the wind almost blows you away…

Next stop was the Taste of Chicago eat-fest.. too crowded.. too beefy… we just stepped out, hungry and hunting for food and ended up with a Subway.

We saw the artistic elevations of buildings on Michilen Dr as we walked along towards the millenium park.. Enter millenium park… an artificial waterfall… and kids were having rock n roll in the water… we were all smiles and moved on to see The Bean… this is a photography mecca… imagine a whole 12 ft high and 20 ft wide bean, which is a mirror… our time for rock n roll..

Next was a cab drive to the Navy Pier where we took a sunset cruise of Chicago skyline which was too romantic to be spent with friends… it has to be your partmner with you for such sunsets🙂

It’s July 4th guys and what about some fireworks over the Navy Pier… good… EOD

Day 2: great weather.. so beach time… …. We were the most overdressed people on the beach.. but nevertheless, it was great fun… These Americans know how to have a good time…. We Indians should learn something from Americans….

We went to the Aquarium but were too late for the Saturday… they closed as we reached and I missed my chance of seeing an Anaconda…😦

It’s Saturday night and i want to have some fun… but where do I find a Jazz Bar in Chicago… KC has a friend in town who drives in and guess what.. they have a plan… and I have to join their plan… and that plan is some “Real” fun.. and the Cliff Richards poped-up in front of me singing “I’ve seen it in the moooovies, now let’s see if it’s trueoooo” … well, in the end i realized it is true…

So, Day 3 next morning was the Temple day to wash-off sins from previous night…🙂 kiddin.. but, yes we went to a temple.. had some authentic South Indian food and did some shopping from the Outlet .

That brought us back to Greyhound station to take our bus to Minneapolis, which was pretty good this time…

So, I din’t see a Zeta-Jones dancing in a Jazz Bar… but I saw another type of dancing giving me my dose of Fun and an inspirational person in Rajiv in Chicago leaving me with a trip to remember with people I just met…
